Jim Felt designs and develops 2 wheelers for more than 25 years now. He was always very dedicated to what he was doing and he still keeps on working in his house in Auburn California every day on new designs, innovations and concepts for better products. Even after 25 years his motivation and excitement on what he´s doing never stopped. Before Jim, who is married and a father of 2 kids, started to design bicycles, he was working in the motorcycle race circus for all major Japanese companies like Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Honda. His job was to develop chassis and frames for pro riders like Jim Weinert, Broc Glover or the Motocross legend Johnny o´ Mara. His designs won hundreds of trophies. During his time travelling with the race circus through the world, Jim developed a passion for Triathlon. Never being satisfied with standard bike models, he bought a little drawing table and began to draw his own tri- and road frame designs. After finishing his motorcycle career he began to build his drawings in the backyard of his house in a small garage into first products. With being his own most critical tester he became more and more satisfied with what he was doing. He tested the frames in races and other racers that were amazed by the good function of his stuff asked him for frames as well. Lucky Jim built two frames for two athletes and they became world champion that year – one in Triathlon, one in Cyclocross. His name got spread around and a big tubing manufacturer named Easton heard about him. They contacted Jim and asked if he would like to work for them to improve product development and tubing designs. With this famous tubing manufacturer in his back Jim now had all freedom to release his creativity. He learned a lot about frame geometry and manufacturing processes. He was able to test and experiment with different materials like titanium, carbon and all different aluminium. It was Jim Felt who developed all famous Easton tubing that was and still is used from companies like Trek, Specialized, GT, Cannondale, Rock Shox, Rocky Mountain, Quintana Roo, Raleigh, Shimano, Manitou, Nishiki etc, etc. One of his most famous developments were the superlight Easton road tube set. Working for Easton didn´t hurt his own creativity at all. He was and still is able to walk into the factory whenever he wants. During the time working for Easton he usually took time on the weekend or in the evenings to work on new private secret projects or work on his own Felt designs. Not having time any more to ride himself he now developed new frames for his girl friend Paula Newby-Fraser. She is the most successful female triathlete in history. This relationship pushed Jim to even more creativity and innovation and his desire to perfectionism and constant improvement. Jim Felts bikes helped Paula Newby-Fraser to win 7 out of 8 wins of the Ironman contest in Hawaii. But not enough with this. Also Mountain bike legend John Tomac, duathlon world champion Kenny Souza, Germanys Triathlon stars Wolfgang Dittrich and Ralf Eggert, Australian star Phil Anderson as well as US triathlete Karin Smyers trusted Jim Felts knowledge. So it was Karin Smyers on her new Felt bike who was able to end Paula Newby-Frasers success story in Hawaii, beating her in the race after 8 wins. Now it is Michelle Jones who rides triathlons on a Felt bike. She won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Sidney in 2000. The demand for Felt bikes increased. It was time for Jim to make a new decision. Being very sad to make the next step to leave Easton he formed a new company with two new partners. Jim Felt still works for Easton, but now mainly to develop tubing for his own brand. Felt Bicycles was born. A new success story will follow.
