As part of training towards the Olympic Games in China in August, The Australian Yngling Team of skipper Krystal Weir, Bow Angela Farrell and Coach Adrian Finglas sailed together to win the Yngling Open European Championship in Lake Garda, Italy today 10th May 2008 - with one race to spare.Conditions were a dependable 10-15 knots each day of the regatta, which consisted of 20 Ynglings from all over the world, including the Italian Olympic team who they will face in Beijing.
The team were minus Trimmer Karyn Gojnich, who is currently in Sydney with her family. The Team is in between two major regattas, and used this Open Regatta as an opportunity to train alongside Coach Adrian Finglas, who usually has to observe from outside the boat."Sailing with the girls at the Europeans has given me a great insight into what the girls experience, and how they approach racing situations. Hobbling down in a harness on the Yngling was surprisingly comfortable though!" Having driven in from various locations in Europe, the team jumped straight in to the boat before the regatta and found their ‘mojo' as a team quite quickly - their worst score in the series being a 5th. The Australians did not have to sail the last race of the series, with just one point up their sleeve. Lake Garda was a fantastic place to train for the team, being central in Europe, relaxing, beautiful and a great new environment to recharge for the next regatta in Holland at the end of May. The team would like to thank Villa Stella Apartments in Torbole for making their stay just like home, and to the Riva Yacht Club for their hospitality and excellent regatta management.
